Statement from the Recycled Rubber Coalition on the Passage of New York AB 7594

The New York State Senate today approved legislation that prevents the sale of playground surfacing materials that contain intentionally-added PFAS, PAHs, and lead. The Recycled Rubber Coalition applauds and endorses this important legislation that keeps New York’s playgrounds safe for all.

The recycled rubber industry has made it a priority to keep intentionally-added PFAS out of playground surfaces. Our members adhere to specific and stringent testing standards to ensure that this is the case. This legislation only reinforces those efforts.

"AB 7594 reinforces what our members have long prioritized: rigorous safety standards that keep playgrounds safe and open for the communities that depend on them,” said Stratton Kirton, a member of the Recycled Rubber Coalition. “We'd like to thank Assemblymember Lunsford and Senator Hinchey for their leadership on this issue. We look forward to continuing that work alongside regulators, manufacturers, and advocates across New York and beyond."

Recycled rubber keeps playgrounds available after inclement weather. A strong and growing body of research across government and academic organizations supports the material’s safety.

The RRC looks forward to working with regulators, manufacturers, and advocates to ensure that high-quality recycled rubber surfacing remains a viable and responsible choice for playgrounds across New York and beyond.
