How Government Grants Promote Tire Recycling in Communities

Tire recycling is a vital component of environmental sustainability. The improper disposal of tires poses significant environmental and health risks, from potential fire hazards to the release of harmful chemicals. However, with the aid of government grants, communities across the nation are driving tire recycling initiatives forward, paving the way for a cleaner, greener future.

How Grant Programs Help

Government-funded tire grant programs are essential for addressing tire waste management challenges and have helped encourage the recycling of more than 220 million tires each year. These grant programs serve as catalysts for change, empowering local governments to divert tires from landfills, combat illegal dumping, and promote markets for recycled tire products.

The majority of funding for scrap tire management, recycling programs, and market development is allocated at the state level. This decentralized approach ensures that resources are tailored to meet the unique needs and challenges faced by communities across different regions. Whether through infrastructure development, educational campaigns, or market incentives, state-level funding plays a pivotal role in driving tire recycling efforts forward.

State Collection Initiatives

As of 2020, and as reported by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, 39 states have established scrap tire programs, collection fees, or funds that help to actively promote the collection of scrap tires. State-implemented fees on new tire purchases are essential for mitigating illegal tire dumping and fostering the adoption of advanced applications for recycled rubber.

Funding supports local governments to host tire recycling events, such as tire amnesty days, and helps promote tire recycling at the local level. These events provide convenient opportunities for the public to dispose of their waste tires responsibly. These accessible and community-focused initiatives incentivize tire recycling, effectively reducing environmental risks and promoting sustainable practices.

State Grant Programs

Once tires are collected, states and local governments can further promote tire recycling through other types of government programs and initiatives that support the best use case for them. One great example of a government grant that encourages the use of recycled rubber tires is the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Playground Scrap Tire Material Grant. This grant recently allocated $30,000 to the Portageville School Board, supporting the development of two new playgrounds that are safer and more accessible for students thanks to the new playground surface made entirely from recycled Missouri tires.

Moreover, in November of 2023, Tennessee announced a new $2.25 million grant as part of its Tire Environmental Act Program to promote recycling efforts by supporting projects that make the best use of waste tires. A portion of this grant was allocated to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK) for a research and development initiative focused on the creation of sustainable technologies for incorporating tire rubber into road construction. A grant of $500,000 was also designated to Liberty Tire Recycling's Nashville facility to help them purchase equipment that will process about 10,000 tons of scrap tires each year.

What's Needed Next

Federal involvement in tire recycling initiatives is crucial for expanding the use of recycled rubber. However, there is still a lot more that can be done at the federal level. For example, agencies such as the U.S. EPA and the Department of Energy should prioritize grants aimed at broadening the utilization of recycled rubber, mirroring existing programs for plastics recycling. This federal support not only encourages innovation but also accelerates the adoption of sustainable practices nationwide.

It is clear that government grants play a pivotal role in promoting tire recycling initiatives in communities, driving progress toward a more sustainable future. By providing funding, resources, and support at the federal, state, and local levels, these programs empower communities to implement innovative solutions for tire waste management. Every step taken towards responsible tire recycling contributes to a cleaner environment and healthier communities.
